My grandpa Rod Thorning was one of the most influential people in my life–he was funny, creative, and an excellent storyteller. I have some great pictures of him, but this one pretty well summaries his style and easy, cool manner. In his youth he was a scoundrel and a cad, loved the ladies and drinking, and just plain having fun. He lived fast.

This picture was taken when he was home in Seattle on leave from Guadalcanal during World War 2.
I don’t know why I’m thinking about him this morning, really. I just am, I guess. He influenced me in many ways–I always wanted to be just like him. And if you know my brother, you will probably see some resemblance here, especially in the days when my brother was smoking.
So here’s to reminiscing about lost family members. May you do yours proud!
